Be Grateful #13

Well, I have been so behind that I missed my gratitude journal last Monday, but I planned to do a post on Thanksgiving, so I figured it would be fine to post it today.  :)

1)  I am thankful for weekends at home and away.
2)  I am thankful for my precious students and that I haven't scared some away so that they feel okay to take me again in the spring.
3)  I am thankful for movie dates and dinner at Denny's.
4)  I am thankful to have finished Christmas shopping for Zach.  (Well, almost.)
5)  I am thankful for the friends I have at work.  Last year, I was still in my shell, but after falling so ill and recovering, I had people pray for us that I had never talked to, and suddenly, I found myself talking to him.
6)  I am thankful to help out my family and friends in any way I can.  And I'm thankful for those that ordered Scentsy to help my niece build her business as well as give me reward points.  I can't wait to get it in and try it!
7)  I'm thankful for clean carpets!
8)  I'm thankful for the kindness of strangers.  Thanks to the Pay It Forward program in our area, an Arvest Bank branch paid for my prescription on Wednesday, which made possibly having an infected tooth and potential root canal in the future easier to deal with.
9)  I'm thankful for my new and old infusion nurses.
10)  I'm thankful for my Gilmore Girls DVDs.
11)  I'm thankful that it is acceptable to put up Christmas decorations and listen to Christmas music this week.
12)  I'm thankful that I work at a place that acknowledges the holidays with Thanksgiving potlucks and a huge Christmas tree in every building.
13)  I'm thankful we have a soda shoppe (but I'm not happy they got rid of our British candy to open it!).
14)  I'm thankful for healthy babies and smooth labors and happy pregnancy for my dear friends.  Introducing my newest best niece, Autumn, who was born on the 13th at 8 lb. 2 oz.  (Y'all.  Her weight is AMAZING.  Her mama, Monica, is TI-EENY.)

Photo a Day in July #30

30.  Calm

This is my little world--Zach and our fur babies.  I know, I know, some of you folks may think it's silly, but those kitties are our babies.  Gosh, as much as I love them now, it will probably kill me to have human kids someday.  They are my sunshine on a cloudy day (or rather, snowflakes, because I don't like the sun, and snow is MY FAVORITE ;).  Ah, just thinking about them and snow makes me so crazy, over-the-moon, dancing-through-the-woods, crazy happy...

Mandy Moore on Grey's Anatomy

photo here
Recently, I started watching Grey's Anatomy on Netflix. I had seen seasons one to five-ish, I believe, when they originally aired, but then they started getting kind of crazy, so I stopped watching.

But I have this compulsive habit of having to finish a series, so when Netflix started streaming the series, I picked it back up. I haven't been disappointed: the series dropped off for awhile during season five, but then picked back up in season six.

Last night after we had gone to see The Hunger Games (sooo good!) and watched the rest of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy with Sheena and I had learned what part of a popcorn piece I could eat, I turned on this episode--the season six finale.

It featured Mandy Moore as a guest star. Right before they cut to this scene, I was telling Zach (who was reading his iPad on the couch) how several Gilmore Girls' stars had guest starred on the show and how that made me happy as it's my favorite. When Mandy Moore appeared, I reminded him that a lot my friends in high school compared me to her because of the movie A Walk to Remember, which I can admit that I LOVED when I was in high school. (I looked like her in that movie in that I had dark hair and bangs, wore similar clothes, and was sick a lot.)

Anyway, Mandy's character Mary starts talking about why she's at Seattle Grace Mercy West, and SHE HAS A COLOSTOMY. Y'all, I could have been knocked over with a feather! Seriously?! A colostomy?! And she goes on to describe just as I do--how she poops in a bag and it's the grossest thing she has ever done and she is ready for her surgery to reverse it! That, my friends, is MY LIFE RIGHT NOW.

Well, Zach immediately put down his iPad at this and looked at me. I told him how I had been waiting for someone to have a colostomy on this show since a colectomy is a fairly common and easy surgery. He asked if that meant her on-screen husband was him, especially after she requested he go get her a pizza. Later, I told him that if I was Mandy Moore that made him Ryan Adams, I guessed, and he was okay with that. ;)

I am telling you that this episode terrified me! Zach kept putting down his iPad to watch, and we were both getting stressed. If you don't remember this episode, a former patient's husband has it in for Derek, Richard, and Lexie, but a lot of other people get in the crossfire along the way.

The thing I kept thinking was, "Poor Mandy. She just wants to get her colostomy reversed. I hope this stuff doesn't happen when I go in for mine..."

Welcome!

Hello and welcome to my new blog! As I write this, I am sitting in the living room of our new home, watching season two of Gilmore Girls (Yes to Jess!) and drinking a cup of tea that has grown cold. From my seat on the settee, I can view our backyard through the doors opening onto the balcony. The December sky is overcast, and it must be a little windy because the half-bare trees are creaking, their branches gone bony. Our red and gold Christmas tree is lit up, and, in the back of my mind, I’m thinking about the ribbon I need to buy at Hobby Lobby today to make a tree topper. I’m also debating whether I should make spaghetti carbonara tonight, or wait until tomorrow. This is life in our new home, and life is perfect. :)

Wednesday morning: watching the sunrise outside our balcony. You probably can't read the temperature, but it was COLD!

I’ve had a Blogger blog on and off for a year and a half—give or take.

The first one I began followed our wedding plans and explored wedding traditions. I was rather snarky when it came to picking apart those so-called traditions. *lol* However, because we only had two months between our engagement and our wedding, and we were both in grad school and completing our theses and working and moving to Baridon…I quickly got off track. You win some, you lose some.

Then I started a daily photo album on facebook. I’ve actually kept this one updated for over a year. (The anniversary was November 30!) It is a lot of fun looking back over the year at everything I did and everything that happened—the good, the bad, and the crazy. About a third into the project, I decided to post it on here, too, because I could add more photos to each day directly. But I never publicized this new blog, and I continued to post the extra photos in their own facebook albums. That’s doing twice as much work for nothing.

In the past, I did XANGA, posted on Myspace, and did the notes thing a few times on facebook. Writing is integral to my life: I’ve kept a diary or a journal since third grade. It is intimidating to put your words out there for everyone to read, but I feel it is a necessary part of the process, especially within this modern age in which we live. My XANGA and Myspace were fairly well read, but they are of the past. Only when I started my Day-by-Day album did more people take notice. I know more people use facebook and use it more often than other websites, but I think part of the reason why my album has been of interest to my facebook friends is because I spend a lot of time photographing and writing about food. (“Food, glorious food!”) On more than one occasion, I’ve had a friend or acquaintance encourage me to start a cooking blog.

Now…this blog will not be ALL about food, as much as I love eating and cooking and talking about food. *haha* BUT food will be a B-I-G part. I promise. :)

Essentially I wanted to start another blog in order to remember this exciting time in our marriage when we moved away and began a new chapter in our life. Right now I’m taking pleasure in the smallest things, whether it is planning out our weekly menu or organizing our huge closets or watching Zach hang our pictures on the walls. (We have so much more space here!) I want to write about my adventures in the kitchen and decorating The Owlery, our little cottage, and searching for the right job. I want our family and friends back home to feel connected to our life here and to meet our new friends. I plan to write once or twice a week about the happenings here. For six months, our future was in the air, so it’s such a nice change of pace to have a home again. I haven’t been homesick since we moved…except when I was sick, but that was mostly the desire to be in my own bed. This is home now.

My daily photo Blogger blog was entitled “The Pharr Side,” and, because I loved the title so much (and thought it somewhat clever), I decided to title this blog the same, especially as NWA really is another state compared to central Arkansas. A professor at NWACC actually asked if I had experienced cultural shock moving here; thankfully Zach had prepared me for the move. Ha!

I thought of the subtitle “From Benton to Bentonville” before we actually found our place (in Bentonville). By the way, I’m a BRYANT girl through-and-through! My mama lives in Benton now, so that was my last home before Zach and I got married.

So, there you have it: what I’m doing and why I’m doing it. Hope you stay tuned! :)
